Protagonist & Antagonist
The Protagonist is the one who is typically seen as a hero or the "good guy" in works of literature and film. They also play a role of being the one who is the main character of the story and is the one who is typically overcoming some kind of obstacle in the conflict. Whereas the Antagonist is the one who opposes the main character and is regularly the obstacle or force keeping the protagonist from getting through a conflict. These two forces collide in Frankenstein and both the main characters can be seen as either a protagonist or antagonist. I believe that Victor Frankenstein is the supposed "good guy" in the story because he is the one with the most obstacles being faced with the deaths in his family, to being at school discovering new science techniques, and overall being the one who the story really is focused on. Yet he does have some flaws that may make him the antagonist and they include the way he treats the creature he mad by abandoning it and not giving it a proper living environment and the way he seems so selfish with wanting to go away for school and not stay at home with his family who needs him when they are in trouble. For the Antagonist, I believe that the creation otherwise known as Pieces is it. He is the one who causes the most trouble everywhere he goes starting when he murder William in the forrest and then "unintentionally" framing Justine for the crime. He is a big obstacle for Victor to overcome since Pieces is only doing these things in spite of Victor. Everywhere Victor goes, Pieces finds a way to make him very upset and feel pain and Pieces ends up killing most of the people closest to Victor by the end of the book and eventually Victor really can't take this longing obstacle in his life and kills himself. But the people Pieces did kill to make things harder for the protagonist were his sibling(s), best friend, and wife. The only way I could see Pieces as being the Protagonist is because he was abandoned and he is the one who is just trying to survive and yes he has some problems but they shouldn't stop others from treating him poorly, he is just trying to learn.
